Seeing that pesky check engine light illuminated on your dashboard can be a major pain. It might be tempting to ignore it, at least for a little while, but this isn't a good idea. Your check engine light could be an indication of a serious problem that could put your car at risk of a more serious repair issue or that could even put you at risk of being stranded or in an accident. Instead, consider heading to one or more of these places to find out what's going on.
Your Driveway
First of all, consider pulling into your driveway and putting your car in park. Allow it to idle for a few minutes; sometimes, the check engine light illuminates when the car is first started, and it might take a few seconds or a few minutes for it to turn off. You should also check the basic things, like ensuring that your gas cap is properly screwed on, that your tires are properly inflated, that you have enough oil and that your oil cap is properly closed. You don't want to waste time and money if it's something simple, and it's smart to check these things on your car periodically anyway.
Your Dealership
If your car is still under warranty, you should take it to the dealership. You probably will not be charged for the check engine light test if your vehicle is under warranty. Plus, if you take it to the dealership, your dealer can ensure that any necessary repairs are covered as they are supposed to be.
An Auto Parts Store
Did you know that many auto parts stores will hook your car up to a computer and determine the source of the check engine light for free? They do this in hopes that you will buy the necessary parts at their store. Someone from the auto parts store should be able to give you an idea of what's going on under the hood of your car, and you may be able to fix the problem by replacing a simple part, such as a filter.
Your Mechanic
Some mechanics charge to hook your car up to a diagnostic machine, but others don't. It's smart to call around. Some will charge you for the test but will waive the price if you have your repairs done at their shop.
If your car's check engine light is on, you should head to one of these places to have your car checked out. Then, you can handle any potential problems before they get more serious or before they put you -- or your vehicle -- at risk.
