Did The Mechanic Do A Good Job After Repairs?

Getting car repairs of any kind is a test of trust between the auto technician and the customer since so many things can go wrong. Although there are some things that may never be the same after certain types of car failure, you need to at least be sure of a car's general working order. After receiving a car from the mechanic, be sure to put the system through its paces with a few inspection points in mind.

Engine Repairs Require More Than Fast Driving

If you've had a new engine installed, a rebuilt engine added or any components repairs on the engine, it makes sense to put the vehicle through its paces as fast as possible. While speed and performance is important, high speeds do not cover everything.

As you test the new engine, consider finding a dirt road or asking local law enforcement about a few low speed, open area testing grounds for driving. You'll want to be able to test every gear your vehicle has, as well as drive with different directions of stress on the engine.

Electronics Can Betray An Engine Problem

Cars with electrical issues may be a simple issue of wiring. Loose wires, burned wires and poor installation of aftermarket parts can lead to outages. If the wiring is correct according to the mechanic, but your radio or other car electronics are failing, the issue may be the engine itself.

The engine generates its own power, using the battery only for an initial charge to get things started. In some events where the engine has problems generating power, the battery can take over and provide a bit of a boost.

The alternator is responsible for converting electrical energy into a mechanical power source for the engine. If it fails, the engine and your car electronics will be running on the car battery. Since the engine has such a high power demand, the battery can quickly drain due to the engine's demand. Because of this, failing electronics could be an indicator of a failing alternator or the entire engine.

Such issues can come and go, and may seem to be temporary issues. The actual problem could be an alternator near failure. Instead of waiting for it to fail completely, contact a vehicle safety check professional, like those at Fantastik Auto Repair, to begin planning better testing, replacements and detailed inspections if you suspect problems with past repairs.
