The engine generates its own power, using the battery only for an initial charge to get things started. In some events where the engine has problems generating power, the battery can take over and provide a bit of a boost.
The alternator is responsible for converting electrical energy into a mechanical power source for the engine. If it fails, the engine and your car electronics will be running on the car battery. Since the engine has such a high power demand, the battery can quickly drain due to the engine's demand. Because of this, failing electronics could be an indicator of a failing alternator or the entire engine.
